So I’m turning into a feminist by the day o.O. I never thought this day would come, but wow!! It’s like finding out that Santa Clause is real. Are you serious.. THAT THING EXISTS!?!?!?
So I went to an all girls school right? [ Yes I went to an all girls school till I finished High School]. And my friends, and most people I know, were brilliant. I mean like seriously bright people. And competition was never about gender. Cause everyone’s a girl right?!? So if you’re smart, you’re smart!! That’s it!! No other explanation needed.
I never had a brother. My dad was the only “Male” in our house. And when my younger cousins came over their numbers increased. But us girls, we were in control, I mean like we were FINE. If something needed to be done at home, we found a way to do it. If we had to lift up stuff, we lifted up stuff. If we needed to figure out the answer to this hard subject, we figured that out too. If something needed to be fixed, you guessed it, we FIXED IT!
Never once have I thought I couldn’t do something because I wasn’t a guy. I’m not saying I can do everything, but if I can’t do it, it’s probably due to a reason that has nothing to do with me being a girl.
So needless to say, I wasn’t really exposed to this gender inequality stuff. As far as I knew, and cared, I can do anything I set my mind to. My gender doesn’t even come into my mind when I plan my life.
Well college is way different. At first I thought everyone was nice, but then I started noticing stuff [ it actually took me a while, cause it was something so foreign to me], different thoughts in my mind.. When a guy holds the door: “what do you mean?? why are you not holding the door for the guy o.O” I mean I don’t mind having someone opening doors for me everywhere I go [those things are heavy] but I hope it’s not because you think I can’t open it myself.
When you know how to do stuff on the computer : “Oh you know how to do that?!?!” What do you mean?!? it’s not rocket science :/!! Like seriously how can a person ask “You can make power points?” with a surprised tone?
And they get surprised when you work hard to get good grades. I don’t know about you, but where I came from, we were serious about our grades. And we know our hard work pays off. I don’t know why everyone expects me to slack off and skip classes, go partying every weekend and go on a number of random dates. I can’t think of one good reason why you would think that I am not, or shouldn’t be, serious about school, my future and my life.
I specially hate group work with a bunch of guys. I seriously don’t regret not going to high school with guys. It’s annoying to see them just ASSUME they know better with their oh-you-can’t-know-more-than-me, you’re-a-girl attitude. I hate it when they try to explain something so simple to me, dude get out of my face I know what it means!! [of course I don’t say that, I’m a girl, girls are nice.]
I obviously can’t write about everything. But I’m so surprised and amazed to see that people still don’t believe girls can perform as good as boys. I mean like with anything. I don’t like it when you treat me different than the guy right next to me, I don’t care if you’re trying to be nice, you can be equally nice to both of us. I don’t need any better treatment. I’m sure I can do as good a job, if not better, as the next guy. Don’t offer me help you won’t offer to another guy.
I’m not saying don’t be a gentleman [ those guys don’t exist anymore anyway so I guess it doesn’t really matter ha haa]. Be nice just because you want to be nice, not because I’m a girl. I, for instance, am nice to both girls and boys the same way. I’ll hold the door whether it’s a girl or a boy behind and offer help regardless of your gender.
Don’t just assume a girl is weak and less intelligent and someone who needs constant attention and guidance. Just bear in mind, we’re the ones who go into labor for hours and give birth to people like you o.O.
[to all my super girlfriends]
